The direct answer: agricultural hauling is seasonal, and that shapes everything about maintenance. Equipment sits for months, then runs flat out for weeks when a crop is ready and nothing may break. The fleets that do this well service in the off-season and inspect before the season, not during it — because during harvest there is no such thing as a convenient breakdown.

What sitting does to a truck

Downtime is not neutral for a diesel. Between seasons, trucks develop problems that have nothing to do with wear:

• Fuel degrades and grows contamination; filters and injectors pay for it on the first hard run.
• Batteries discharge and sulfate.
• Air systems collect moisture; valves and dryers seize.
• Tires flat-spot and sidewalls check from UV and weight without rotation.
• Rodents and dust get into wiring, filters and cabs in a way they never do on a truck in daily use.
• Seals dry out from lack of circulation, so the first leak appears the day the truck goes back to work.

The pattern is predictable enough to plan for. A pre-season inspection catches most of it in a shop, cheaply, instead of in a field at 5am with a load waiting.

In-season the constraint is time, not money

During harvest a truck that is down is not a maintenance expense, it is a missed load and sometimes a spoiled one. That is why we schedule overnight and weekend work for seasonal fleets — work happens in the hours the truck would be parked anyway, and it is ready before dawn.

It is also why we would rather see the fleet in the quiet months. Deferred work found in February is a scheduled repair; the same fault found in September is a crisis.

Agricultural operations in California have their own regulatory footing, and what applies to a given vehicle depends on how it is registered, how far it operates and what it hauls. Rather than summarise it, we will point you at the deciding authorities: CHP for terminal and inspection questions, CARB for emissions program applicability, and the DMV for permit questions. Because sitting causes its own faults — fuel contamination, moisture in the air system, flat batteries, dried seals. It is one of the few maintenance conversations where doing nothing is genuinely the cause.

Can you work around harvest?

Yes — scheduled overnight and weekend work is available by arrangement, which is usually the only workable window in season.
