Volvo’s D13 is the standard heart of the VNLs running Sacramento’s corridors — refined, sensor-rich, and happiest with owners who read its signals early. We service D-series engines independently (no Volvo affiliation), with the same data-first approach the truck’s own electronics assume.

Is the D13 expensive to maintain?

It’s economical when maintained on rhythm and expensive when surprised — more than most engines, it rewards scheduled attention and oil analysis.

D13, MP8, and the fleets that run both

The D13 is Volvo Group's mainstream engine, so it turns up in Volvo highway trucks and, in closely related MP-series form, in Mack chassis. Fleets running both brands are effectively running one engine family, which makes maintenance planning simpler than the two nameplates in the yard would suggest.

These engines are tightly integrated with the transmission and aftertreatment — I-Shift on the Volvo side, mDRIVE on the Mack side — and the truck manages a good deal of its own behaviour. The practical consequence is that power and regen complaints are data questions first: read what the truck recorded before deciding what to open.

Aftertreatment work is in-house: forced regens, DPF cleaning and replacement, and DEF and SCR repair.
