Volvo drivetrain, and the Mack relationship

Volvo and Mack are both Volvo Group brands, and their driveline engineering is closely related — the Volvo D13 and Mack's MP8 come from the same family, and the I-Shift and mDRIVE automated transmissions are siblings. That relationship is genuinely useful: experience on one carries over to the other in a way it does not between unrelated makes.

Volvo highway trucks are heavily integrated — engine, transmission and aftertreatment behave as one system, and the truck often manages its own regens and torque behaviour based on what it sees. That means a complaint about power or a regen cycle is frequently a data question before it is a mechanical one, and pulling fault history early saves guessing later.

The D13 (or D11) engine, the I-Shift automated transmission and the aftertreatment behave as one managed system, and the truck records a great deal about its own decisions. That is why a Volvo complaint is a data question first: fault history, regen and DEF dosing records, and torque-management events are read before anything is opened. VNL and VNR trucks built after the 2018 redesign package electronics and body modules differently from the earlier VN series, and the electrical system — grounds, module communication, sensor circuits — is the most common source of faults that imitate mechanical ones.
