MP8 aftertreatment keeps acting up — normal?

Vocational duty cycles are hard on every maker’s emissions systems — frequent low-speed, high-idle work loads DPFs fast. It’s manageable with the right maintenance rhythm; ignored, it’s a derate on delivery morning.

MP-series power, vocational duty, and the Volvo connection

Mack sits in the Volvo Group alongside Volvo Trucks, and the drivetrains are close relatives — the MP7 and MP8 share engineering lineage with the D-series, and mDRIVE is the sibling of Volvo's I-Shift. Experience transfers between the two in a way it simply does not between unrelated makes.

Where Mack differs in practice is the work it tends to do. A large share of the Macks around Sacramento are vocational — mixers, dumps, refuse, roll-off — running stop-start cycles, heavy PTO hours and constant dust. That duty cycle punishes brakes, suspension and cooling far faster than highway miles do, and it is a poor fit for maintenance intervals written around a mileage table. We would rather set intervals from how the truck actually works.
