Engine Diagnostics and Repairs

Engine trouble on a working truck costs money by the hour

A diesel that's down — or limping in derate — isn't a mechanical problem, it's a revenue problem. Our approach is built around that: diagnose the actual fault first, quote before wrenching, and fix what's broken instead of replacing parts on a hunch.

Diagnostics before parts

Modern truck engines rarely fail silently — they log codes, derate, smoke, or drink fuel first. We start every engine job by reading what the truck already knows and testing what it doesn't:

  • Full electronic diagnostics — fault codes, live sensor data, and freeze frames, interpreted rather than just read aloud
  • Mechanical checks where the electronics can't see: compression and cylinder health, fuel supply and return, air and boost leaks, coolant and oil condition
  • Aftertreatment assessment — a huge share of “engine” complaints on modern diesels start in the EGR and DPF system, and treating those correctly is the difference between a repair and a comeback

Engine repairs we handle

  • Hard starts, no-starts, and rough idle
  • Loss of power, derates, and limp mode
  • Overheating and cooling system failures
  • Fuel system faults — injectors, pumps, filters, air intrusion
  • Turbo and boost problems — tested before anything is condemned
  • Oil pressure complaints and leak diagnosis
  • Excessive smoke — white, black, or blue, each of which points somewhere different
  • Electrical and sensor faults that masquerade as mechanical failures — diagnosed with the electrical system in scope, not guessed at

We service the brands Sacramento actually runs: Peterbilt, International, Freightliner, Dodge, Volvo, and Mercedes-Benz.

In the shop or where the truck sits

Engine work happens in our North Highlands bays — but diagnostics often doesn't have to. If the truck is drivable we'll tell you whether it's safe to bring in; if it isn't, emergency and mobile service can put a mechanic and a scan tool next to the truck, and towing is available when the right answer is a bay.

Common questions

My truck went into derate — can I keep driving it?

Short answer: get it diagnosed quickly. A derate is the engine protecting itself, and the underlying cause ranges from a sensor fault to a fault that will strand you. Call us, describe the warning lights, and we'll tell you honestly whether it should roll or wait for us.

Do you rebuild engines?

We diagnose to the point of knowing what the right repair is — and when the honest answer is major work rather than a patch, we'll lay out the options and costs before anything is opened up. What we won't do is quote a rebuild on this page without having seen your engine.

Can you tell what's wrong over the phone?

Sometimes close — symptoms, warning lights, and when they appear narrow it a lot. Call (916) 571-8888 and describe it; if it needs a scan tool and a bay we'll say so, and if it sounds like something simple we'll say that too.

Why is my check engine light on but the truck runs fine?

Fault codes fire long before failures do — that's the point of them. A truck that “runs fine” with a light on is usually a truck that's cheaper to fix this week than next month. A diagnostic read tells you which one you have.

Managing more than one truck? Across a fleet, the same fault recurring is a data problem as much as a diagnostic one. Read about the maintenance numbers worth tracking.
