Diesel Losing Power: Narrowing It Down

First question: gradual or sudden?

A truck that's been slowly getting lazier is telling a different story than one that lost power overnight. Gradual points at filters, injectors wearing, boost leaks growing, or a filling DPF. Sudden points at a derate, a failed component, or something mechanical. Either way — if it's accompanied by warning lamps, smoke, or new noise, treat it as urgent.

Where power goes

• The computer took it — an active derate is the most common cause on modern trucks, and it's recorded; a scan answers it in minutes
• Air in, exhaust out — clogged air filter, boost leaks, a tired turbo, or a restricted DPF choke the engine at both ends
• Fuel — plugged filters, weak supply pumps, air intrusion, failing injectors; classic when power fades on grades and long pulls
• Mechanical — low compression, valve problems, EGR coking; the expensive tier, which is why we test the cheap tiers first

How we find it

1. Scan first — derates and stored faults are the five-minute answers
2. Check the restrictions: air filter, boost system pressure test, exhaust backpressure
3. Test fuel supply pressure and look for air in the fuel
4. Only then talk about mechanical testing — with data pointing the way, not guesses

Common questions

Power's fine empty but terrible loaded — what does that mean?

Load exposes marginal systems — usually fuel delivery or boost. An engine that can't breathe or drink properly shows it first when it's working hardest.

Could it just be a cheap filter?

Genuinely, sometimes yes — air and fuel filters are the first checks precisely because they're cheap and common. Hope for the filter; test for the rest.

Is it safe to keep driving down on power?
