Fleet Service for Waste, Recycling & Roll-Off Fleets

The direct answer: refuse and roll-off trucks do more work in a day than a highway tractor does in a week, and they do it in the worst possible conditions for equipment — constant stops, heavy hydraulics, abrasive dust, and loads that shift. Maintenance intervals written around mileage are close to meaningless here. Hours and cycles are what matter.

Why mileage is the wrong measure

A refuse truck might cover sixty miles in a shift and make six hundred stops. The odometer says light duty; the brakes, hydraulics and driveline know otherwise. Fleets that service on mileage systematically under-maintain these vehicles and then treat the resulting failures as bad luck.

What actually wears:

  • Brakes — the single highest-wear item, by a distance. Stop counts, not miles.
  • Hydraulics — packers, hoists and roll-off cables run continuously; leaks and cylinder wear are routine rather than exceptional.
  • PTO and driveline — constant engagement under load.
  • Suspension and steering — heavy loads, curbs, unpaved transfer stations.
  • Cooling and aftertreatment — low road speed means low airflow and low exhaust temperature; overheating and incomplete regens both follow.
  • Dust ingress everywhere — filters, seals and electrical connectors all pay for it.

The out-of-service exposure

Waste fleets get inspected. Several of the highest vehicle out-of-service rates published by FMCSA for carriers in this region belong to waste and roll-off operators, and brakes are the most common finding. That record is public — see how to read your out-of-service rate — and it is visible to the municipalities and commercial customers who award the contracts.

What we do for waste and roll-off fleets

  • Intervals set from hours and cycles rather than odometer readings
  • Brake service treated as the primary wear item it actually is
  • Hydraulic diagnosis and repair on packers, hoists and roll-off systems
  • Cooling system work for low-speed, high-load duty
  • Emissions and aftertreatment — forced regens, DPF cleaning, DEF repair — where idle time makes regens a recurring issue
  • DOT inspections, plus repairs found, in the same visit
  • Scheduled overnight and weekend work so trucks are serviced between routes rather than pulled off them

Common questions

How often should refuse trucks be serviced?

Far more often than mileage suggests, and the right interval depends on stop count, hydraulic hours and terrain. We would rather set it from your route data than quote a number that fits nobody.

Our brakes keep failing inspection. Is that normal for this work?

Common, not normal. The duty cycle explains fast wear; it does not explain being caught by an inspector rather than by your own process. That is usually an interval or pre-trip problem — see why pre-trips stop finding defects.

Can you work on the hydraulics as well as the chassis?

Tell us what systems you run and we will be straight about what we handle in-house versus what we would refer.

Can you service trucks at night so routes are not disrupted?

Yes — scheduled overnight and weekend work is available by arrangement.

Where to start

Bring us your route profile and your last two years of inspection reports. We will tell you which failures are duty-cycle inevitable and which are schedule problems you can fix.
