DPF Cleaning vs Replacement: The Cost Factors That Matter
Last reviewed: 2026-08-05
The direct answer: we don't publish a single price because there isn't one — the real bill depends on whether your filter needs a regen, a cleaning, or replacement; on the filter itself; and on the upstream fault that loaded it. What we can do is show you the decision honestly, so a quote makes sense when you get one (ours or anyone's).
The cost ladder
- Forced regen — the cheapest tier: soot burned off in the bay when the filter and fault allow it. If a shop jumps straight past this option, ask why.
- Professional cleaning — for ash and soot regens can't remove; the filter is removed and cleaned. Costs vary with method and filter; cleaning done on a cracked or melted filter is money burned, which is why inspection comes first.
- Replacement — the expensive tier: warranted-quality replacements cost real money (aftermarket quality varies enormously — a cheap DPF that fails in a year is the most expensive option on this page). Prices differ by engine and filter; get the quote in writing with the part's warranty stated.
The multiplier everyone forgets
Something loaded that filter. A leaking injector, tired turbo, EGR fault, or a duty cycle that never regens — replace the DPF without fixing the feeder and you're renting the new one. The diagnosis (see DPF warning light) is the cheapest line on the invoice and the one that protects the rest.
The “cheap” option that isn't
A delete looks like the escape hatch from all of this. In California it's illegal, it's detectable at inspection, penalties run brutal, and it torpedoes resale. We don't do deletes — the legal repair path is cheaper than the consequences, every time. (See derates for how the truck itself enforces this.)
Common questions
How do I know if my filter is clean-able or done?
Ash load, physical condition (cracks, melting), and history decide it — measured, not guessed. We inspect before recommending either path and tell you what we found.
Why do quotes for the “same job” vary so much between shops?
Different tiers (regen vs clean vs replace), different part quality, and whether the upstream cause is being fixed or ignored. A cheap quote that skips diagnosis usually costs the most by year's end.
Can maintenance make my DPF last longer?
Substantially — healthy injectors and turbo, correct oil (ash content matters), and a duty cycle that lets regens complete all extend filter life. It's a core reason PM pays on modern diesels.
