Fuel Economy Decline: Where the MPG Went

A sudden MPG drop is a symptom, not a mood

At truck fuel burn, a half-MPG decline is thousands of dollars a year — and it's usually the first visible sign of a fault that will eventually show up as a lamp or a breakdown. Catching it here is the cheap version.

Mechanical causes

• Aftertreatment working overtime — frequent regens burn fuel; see DPF problems; upstream faults making soot get paid for twice, in power and fuel
• Boost leaks and tired turbos — the engine fuels for air it isn't getting
• Injector wear — poor atomization burns more to do less
• Dragging brakes — a hung caliper or dragging shoe is a small fire you're fueling; often paired with a hot wheel
• Alignment and tires — underinflation and scrubbing axles tax every mile; check wear patterns

Operational causes — rule them out honestly

New route, new driver, winter fuel blends, headwind season, heavier loads, more idle time — all real. The tell: mechanical causes usually arrive suddenly or with other symptoms; operational ones track the calendar and the load board.

Common questions

How much decline is worth investigating?

If the drop is sustained across fills and not explained by season or load — investigate. The math almost always favors the diagnosis: the fault is billing you weekly either way.

Can a PM service fix fuel economy?

Regularly — filters, pressures, and the inspection that catches drag and leaks are exactly what preventive maintenance is for. It's the highest-ROI first step.

Does the DPF really affect MPG that much?
