ABS Light On: What It Means and Whether You Can Keep Driving
First: can you keep driving?
Usually, yes — carefully. The service brakes still work when the anti-lock system faults; ABS is an overlay that releases a locking wheel, and losing it means the truck can skid or jackknife under hard braking on a wet or icy surface. If the ABS lamp came on together with low air pressure, a brake warning, or a change in pedal feel, that is a brake problem, not an ABS problem — stop safely and call. An ABS lamp alone is an inspection violation and a reason to get it diagnosed this week: (916) 571-8888.
Why the lamp is on
- Wheel speed sensor faults — by far the most common: a sensor pushed back from its tone ring by bearing play or a brake job, corroded, or with a damaged ring. The module sees one wheel “stop” and sets a fault.
- Wiring and connectors — chafed harnesses at the axle, green pins, and on trailers the seven-way connector and the blue-wire ABS power feed.
- Power or ground problems on the trailer — a weak constant-power feed lights the trailer lamp with nothing wrong at any wheel.
- Modulator valves or the module — real, but far rarer than the three above, and never diagnosed by replacement here.
Tractor lamp, trailer lamp, and the in-cab trailer lamp
The tractor’s ABS lamp reports the tractor. The trailer has its own lamp on its left side, and tractors built since the early 2000s also carry an in-cab trailer ABS lamp fed over the power line from the trailer. A trailer lamp lit while the in-cab lamp stays dark often means the tractor cannot hear the trailer — a connector or communication fault — rather than a trailer brake problem. Reading which lamp is on, and when, is the first diagnostic step.
How we find it
- Pull the blink codes or scan data — the module names the wheel end and circuit
- Test the accused sensor: output while the wheel spins, resistance, gap to the tone ring, ring condition
- Check power and ground at the module and, on trailers, at the seven-way
- Only then look at valves and the module — and fix what was actually found
Most ABS faults are sensors and wiring that mobile service can fix at your yard or dock.
Common questions
Will an ABS light fail a DOT inspection?
An illuminated ABS malfunction lamp is a violation on vehicles required to have ABS, and inspectors check for it during the walk-around. Because we perform DOT inspections in-house, we fix it before the inspection, not after the citation.
The light flashes at start-up and goes out — is that a fault?
No. A bulb check at power-up is normal, and trailer lamps may stay on until the trailer rolls a few miles per hour. A lamp that stays on while driving is the one to diagnose.
Can a bad wheel bearing set an ABS code?
Yes. Bearing play lets the tone ring wobble away from the sensor, and the module reads it as a signal fault. That is why an ABS code on one wheel end gets the hub checked, not just the sensor replaced — see axle and hub repair.
