Air Pressure Loss: When It's Safe and When It Isn't

Air is the brakes. Treat pressure loss accordingly.

If the low-air warning comes on while driving, or pressure keeps falling with the engine running — get off the road now. Below spring-brake range the truck will stop itself, wherever it happens to be. Slow leak-down parked overnight is a different urgency — every truck loses a little; a truck that's empty by morning has a leak worth finding before it grows.

Where the air goes

• Fittings, airlines, and gladhands — the everyday leaks, often audible as a hiss
• Brake chambers and diaphragms — leaks here matter more, because they're inside the thing that stops you
• Valves — foot valve, relay valves, park-control: leaks that change with pedal or knob position point here
• The compressor and governor — slow builds and long recovery times: a compressor passing oil or a governor cutting out wrong
• The air dryer — a purge valve stuck open dumps air; a dryer past its service life feeds moisture to every valve downstream, which becomes winter freeze-ups

How we find leaks

1. Quantify it: build time and leak-down rates, engine off, brakes applied and released — the pattern narrows the system
2. Soap-test and listen at the usual suspects, tractor and trailer
3. Check compressor output and governor cut-in/cut-out against spec
4. Repair, then re-test the whole system — air leaks travel in groups

Common questions

How much overnight loss is normal?

Rules of thumb exist, but the honest answer is: a healthy system loses very little, and “needs a build-up every morning” is a leak, not a personality trait. If you're noticing it, it's worth finding.

Why does my air system act up in cold weather?

Moisture — water in the lines freezes at valves and dryers. Usually it means the air dryer cartridge is overdue or the dryer is passing water. Fix the moisture, not just the frozen valve.

Is an air leak a DOT violation?

Audible leaks and inadequate build rates are inspection items, yes — and since we do DOT inspections, we fix systems to pass the real test, not just to quiet the hiss.
