Steering feel is a safety system — changes are findings

A truck that suddenly steers heavy, wanders, or pulls isn't “getting old” — something specific changed. With 80,000 pounds and a 13-hour day, steering effort and stability are fatigue and safety issues, not comfort preferences.

Heavy steering

• Power steering supply — low fluid (find the leak), a tired pump, or a failing gear; heavy-at-low-speed is the classic signature
• Tire pressure — underinflated steers make any truck heavy; the free check that embarrasses everyone
• Kingpins and column — binding that makes effort high and return-to-center lazy

Wander and pull

• Worn steering joints — play in drag links and tie rods becomes constant correction at the wheel
• Kingpin wear — the front axle's pivot points; wear here makes precision impossible
• Alignment — pulls and shoulder-worn steer tires; on tractors, rear-axle alignment and even trailer alignment feed steering behavior ("dog tracking")
• Uneven loading or suspension faults — a sagged spring or failed air bag steers the truck all day

Inspection that answers it

1. Dry-park check: watch every joint while the wheel is worked — play shows itself
2. Kingpin lift check, wheel-end play, tire pressures and wear patterns
3. Power steering pressure/flow when effort is the complaint
4. Alignment measurement — steer, drive, and trailer axles as indicated

Common questions

Steer tires wearing on one shoulder — related?

Directly — shoulder wear is alignment or worn parts writing their confession on the tire. Fix the cause before buying the next pair; see tire services.

Is steering play a DOT item?

Yes — steering lash beyond limits and worn components are inspection violations and out-of-service material. We check it the way an inspector would — see DOT inspections.

It wanders worst with an empty trailer — why?

Light axles amplify play and alignment faults — the slop is always there; the load was masking it. Empty-trailer wander is still a repair item.
