Truck Vibration: What the Pattern Tells You

Vibration is a message with an address on it

Where you feel it and when it happens points at the source. Steering wheel shake: front tires and wheel-ends. Seat-of-the-pants buzz that tracks road speed regardless of gear: driveline or rear tires. Vibration under acceleration that eases when you lift: u-joints and driveline angles. Everything-shakes-at-idle: engine mounts or a misfire, not the driveline at all.

Common sources

• Tires and wheels — imbalance, flat-spotting, separation, or a bent wheel; the most common and cheapest tier — see tire services
• U-joints — wear shows as acceleration-sensitive vibration and a clunk on throttle changes; cheap caught early, catastrophic ignored — a dropped driveshaft at speed is a genuinely dangerous failure
• Driveshaft balance and angles — lost weights, dented tubes, or sagged suspension changing the geometry
• Carrier bearing — hum and vibration that grows with speed
• Wheel-end play — bearings loose enough to vibrate are loose enough to worry about

How we chase it

1. Characterize it: speed-dependent or RPM-dependent? Load-sensitive? Where felt? — this cuts the suspect list in half before a wrench moves
2. Inspect u-joints, carrier bearing, and driveshaft physically — play and stains tell stories
3. Check tires and wheel-ends
4. Fix, road-test, confirm gone — vibration “repairs” that skip the road test come back

Common questions

It started suddenly after a tire shop visit — coincidence?

Probably not — lost balance weights and mis-seated wheels are classic. Start there before suspecting the driveline.

A clunk when I shift from reverse to drive — related?

That's the u-joint/driveline-slack signature. With vibration under acceleration too, get the driveline inspected promptly — that combination is the pre-failure pattern.
